ASO-KUJU
National Park
Promotional Tour

Aso-Kuju National Park was born in 1934, one of the oldest National Park in Japan.

Especially, the Aso Caldera, one of the world’s largest, was recently certified as a Global Geopark. The caldera itself consists of an outer mountain ring surrounding the Five Peaks of Aso, with the currently active Mt. Nakadake at its center. Vast grasslands cover the caldera valley and mountainsides.

To protect these grasslands, the locals regularly cut and burn away the underbrush, as they have done for over 1000 years.

Dates:

See the Aso Volcano and experience the culture that has developed in harmony with the volcano over the past 1000 years!

Aso is Japan’s largest active volcano and lies in one of the world’s largest calderas (a depression formed when a volcano collapses).
In Aso, an entire city is actually located inside the caldera!
Over the centuries, these people living inside the caldera have developed their own history and culture, and through careful maintenance of the grasslands, they have kept them as useful farming and grazing areas instead of letting them revert into forests.

Cycling

In the morning, you will explore the village of Minamiaso either by bicycle (Cycling Course) or by foot (Footpath Course) and experience the importance of water and farming in the local community.

(Please choose whether you will participate in the A. Cycling or B. Footpath courses in the morning. Both courses will be guided.)

Foot pass
Lunch

Lunch is dengaku, a local specialty of fish, vegetables and tofu flavored with miso and cooked in an open hearth at your table.

Guided walk

In the afternoon, we will take you to Kusasenri, a wide open area on top of Mt. Aso offering spectacular views of the very active volcano. Kusasenri is an area that is maintained through yearly field burnings to prevent tree growth and preserve the land for grazing. A guide will join us here to explain the history of Aso.
